Local swimmers have taken home the Mullumbimby Cup competing against more than 100 youngsters who converged on the Petria Thomas Pool for the North Coast Qualifying Carnival last Saturday.

The young athletes aged from six to 17 years competed on behalf of 11 swimming clubs from across the region including big clubs Port Macquarie, Lismore and Tweed/Coolangatta.

The Mullumbimby Club had a team of 22 swimmers who achieved the best overall result for a swim team by winning 41 gold, 30 silver and 18 bronze medals.

‘We were very strong in the 11-12-year age groups for girls,’ head coach for the Mullum Swimming Club Craig Davidson said.

The meet was also an opportunity for the swimmers to qualify for the regional carnival in Coffs Harbour at the end of November.

‘We are really pleased with the performance of the swimmers,’ Craig said.

‘At this stage of the season they performed strongly and are looking forward to the next level of competition in Coffs Harbour where we are looking to send a strong competitive team,’ Craig said.

‘It’s only really early days. The team is in a rebuilding stage at the moment and we are really excited about the future.

‘We have some great talented younger swimmers who are new to the club and we have plenty of opportunities for new members to join the club,’ he said.

The next race club night at the Mullumbimby Pool is Friday November 11.
