Sailing on the Tweed River was a tricky affair with sometimes light and always shifting winds and a strong ebbing tide as 17 boats with 38 crew contested the fifth race of the Summer Pointscore Series.

Well done to seven-year- old Darcy Busbridge from Fingal Head, who competed in his first race, taking his older brother’s place on NS14 Zazen with Adam Hurt.

Overall pointscore winner on handicap was Malcolm Maiden from Tweed Heads sailing an NS14 Mantana.

It was his best result with the club, and well earned after spending time run aground in the very shallow low tide.

Overall time corrected by yardstick winner was Lex Branch from Bilambil on Impulse Splitter.

Second place on handicap went to Toby and Anna Poulsen on AquaCat Wooshka and third was Geoff Carter, Jo Carter and Tom Busbridge on Corsair Swallow.

Seven three-handed Corsairs competed in race two of the Tweed River Corsair Championship.

Taking first place in the Corsairs was Minnow, with skipper Bill Fenelon, and crew Sienna Pullan and Deborah Flannery. Taking advantage of local knowledge to find the fastest way to sail against the tide, Minnow was virtually unchallenged, finishing five minutes ahead of the next Corsair.

Second place was a very close race and the next four boats finished within 50 seconds of each other, with second place Corsair; Monique Smith, Matt Andrews and Kate Yeomans beating third- placed all Fingal Head crew Alison Blatcher, Karen Vidler and Marg Walgers by only one second.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
