Alhadeff and Burd complain about criticism of Israel by FastBuck$ and myself (In Defence of Israel , Byron Shire Echo Letters, January 18).

The headline is inappropriate as it is Palestine not Israel that needs defending.

Israel’s non-WMD military might is ranked 16th from 126 countries (http://www.globalfirepower.com/country-military-strength-detail.asp?country_id=israel).

Against Israel’s advanced weaponry Palestine boasts slingshots, scissors, kitchen knives and thousands of rudimentary rockets which damaged some Israeli roofs; Gaza has been repeatedly blitzed, razed and will be uninhabitable by 2020 (http://www.gazaincontext.com/).

‘Israel is an apartheid state implementing a Matrix of Control which transforms the Occupied Palestinian Territory into probably the most monitored, controlled and militarised place on earth.

It epitomises the dream of every general, security expert and police officer to be able to exercise total biopolitical control.

In a situation where the local population enjoys no effective legal protections or privacy, they and their lands become a laboratory where the latest technologies of surveillance, control and suppression are perfected and showcased, giving Israel an edge in the highly competitive global market’ (Jeff Halper, War against the People: Israel, the Palestinians and Global Pacification, p.143).

Al Jazeera’s covert investigation into Israel’s infiltration of British politics revealed shocking plans to ‘take down’ the UK’s deputy foreign secretary over his criticism of Israel’s settlement policy in the occupied West Bank (http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/uk-mp-urges-probe-alleged-israeli-interference-170108132151019.html).

No doubt this infiltration is also happening in Australia and is a threat to national security.

Israeli journalist Gideon Levy says that most Israelis are ignorant of what is happening in Palestine even though they may be just half an hour away.

Be assured Mr Burd, Byron Friends of Palestine will help educate brainwashed Jews and Israelis coming to Byron Bay.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Mr Smith’s assertions are way off the board. First let’s look at his dissection of the perceived inequality between the armaments possessed by Hamas and the Israelis. Israel is a nation state, Hamas is a terrorist organization which wrested power in Gaza by force and intimidation and murder. The idea that Hamas possess only some ineffectual rockets, slingshots and stones is bizarre to say the least. Hamas is well armed and supplied with rocket launchers, RPGs, automatic rifles and machine guns. A rudimentary rocket is still able to kill people if it strikes in a densely populated area and the only reason this has not happened is due to Israel’s Iron Dome anti rocket defense systems. Yes Israelis are well armed and protected. They have to be.Would Mr Smith prefer to see more Israelis die from Hamas attacks? Hamas also uses suicide bombers, many of who have thankfully been stopped by the watchful Israel Defense Forces. May instances of Arabs trying to cross into Israel laden with suicide vests have been thwarted and continue to be on a daily basis. Mr Smith simply never hears of them because not all incidents are reported, so I suggest he tune into Israeli news programs occasionally to find out what actually happens there instead of relying on leftwing and Arab propaganda. The notion that most Israelis have no idea what is happening in their own country would have to be one of the silliest assertions I have ever seen an anti Israel commentator make, and believe me there are some real doozies out there, like the ones where people allege Israel harvests body parts and organs from jailed Arabs. It is strange that a person like Mr Smith and all the other commentators about the Israeli-Arab conflict should choose to waste their time in such a thing when there are so many more pressing issues to attend to, like Female Genital mutilation, beheadings and floggings for crimes, many minor, the execution of gays by hangjng from cranes and throwing from roof tops by Muslims all over the middle east. But then I imagine those are issues Mr Smith and his friends of Palestine group rarely hear about simply because they are seldom reported even though they are a regular occurrence in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Syria now. As much as I enjoy living in the Byron Shire I find many people here ill informed about the reality on the ground in Israel. Apartheid in Israel is a myth too. Arabs enjoy freedoms all other Israeli citizens do including the right to be elected into the Knesset, property rights, voting rights and the rights to do business and establish companies. Mr Smith should spend more time and energy looking at and championing the human rights abuses in Arab Muslim countries rather then concentrating on Israel as the UN does a very good job at condemning Israel at every opportunity. His assertion that Gaza will be uninhabitable by 2020 is also ridiculous. Gaza has been inhabited almost continually for over 7000 years. Why would it suddenly become uninhabitable? Does Mr Smith have any basis for his assertions other than what he has read from others whose qualifications are questionable? He should stop painting the Israelis as some sort of genocidal people and grasp a straw of reality before he is shown to be a totally non credible person. If Israel wanted to destroy Gaza it could do it in a mater of hours. So please Mr Smith stop this nonsense and stop fueling the flames of hatred.
