Political life imitates art

Greg Aitken believes Baird’s sudden exit from politics is a sign but has nothing to do with the country-town theatre company. He thinks.

The director of the Mongrel Arts project Drill Hall Theatre Company production of Louis Nowra’s play The Incorruptible said, ‘It is fanciful to suggest that our upcoming production had any impact on Mike Baird’s decision to retire from public life. Sure the play tells the tale of the rise and fall of a conviction right-wing Christian politician who becomes premier of a state but it’s just a coincidence.’ In a statement to The Echo, the director Gregory Aitken wrote, ‘In our show, Ion Stafford, the premier in The Incorruptible, sells off public assets so that business can run the state more efficiently. He doesn’t care what people think because of the strength of his own moral convictions on economic and justice issues. The comparison with the outgoing premier of NSW may resonate but it was never our intention to bring him down. We are just producing a classic Australian play.’

Aitken invited anyone who believes that the Drill Hall production undermined the ex-premier to see the production that opens on Australia Day at the Drill Hall Theatre, Mullumbimby.

Drill Hall Theatre, Thursday–Sunday with shows at 7.30pm and Sunday matinee at 2pm.

Running until Sunday 5 February.

Webb in the Garden

The Byron Brewery launch their monthly FREE headline comedy show with the hilarious Lindsay Webb. ‘Lindsay Webb is more than your average standup. He has an almost mindreader-like ability to pick faces in the audience and create a show purely on where they come from and what they do. The last time I saw him at The Arkaba half the show was a six-degrees exercise in linking audience members together. It was sheer genius.’

That’s what one reviewer said of him at the Adelaide Fringe after his sellout show in 2016.

Back in 2009 Webb took out the Guinness World Record for the Longest Show by an Individual – 38hrs 6min. It just shows what a relentless energy Webb has – able to improvise and create unique comedy experiences every time he hits the stage.

Lindsay Webb is joined by the superbly funny Paul McMahon as support and much-loved Queen of Comedy, Mandy Nolan as MC.

Comedy in the Garden at the Byron Brewery, Friday 3 February at 8pm.

Free show!

Come early because this is CULT COMEDY at its best.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
