Byron Bay’s Kyuss King and Lennox Head’s Mikey McDonagh have had great results at the WSL JQS Subway Surf Series, at North Cronulla Beach last week.
King finished runner-up with a valiant effort in the final, but was unable to find the 8.85 wave score needed to snag the top spot from winner Reef Heazelwood.
‘That was great to have a heat with Reef,’ said King. ‘I really wanted to do well in this event following a poor start at Bells, so I’m stoked to do it here. Hopefully, I can get a few more over the course of the year.’
McDonagh was defeated by King in the semifinal and is now sitting on top of the Australasian JQS ratings ladder.
‘I had to change my boards around to suit the conditions and rode an epoxy, which felt a bit more sparky,’ McDonagh said.
‘Whichever way that heat went, I think I would have been happy following the result I got at Bells but it’s definitely nice to back it up here with a semifinal finish.’
