Paul Barrett, founder of the popular local drumming group Samba Blisstas, died on January 13.

Tributes have flowed on social media from the local creative and music groups and the wider community.

Paul Barrett’s interest in Brazilian samba street percussion goes back to the 1990s, when he led Freo Samba in Western Australia.

Freo Samba was a colourful part of Fremantle’s culture and performed at many events during its seven-year history including the Fremantle Festival, Buskers Festival, Latino Festival, and several Perth Glory matches.

Councillor and friend Paul Spooner paid tribute to Barrett, whom he knew from those days. Barrett founded the Samba Blisstas (carnavaldrumming.com) in 2003, who have performed at many local festivals and NYE events. Barrett has been battling a cardiac condition since November.

# The Samba Blisstas are due to perform at The Rails in Byron Bay on January 26 from 4pm.

  1. Vale Paul Barrett, drum major extraordinaire.

I have fond memories of the early days of the Samba Blisstas when they supported the 4 July Independence from America Day parades through Byron 2004-5.

He drummed for freedom from the US alliance and its endless wars.

He drummed till his big heart broke.
