Gabriella Cohen in Bruns

Gabriella Cohen, Australia’s folk darling, is coming to Brunswick Picture House to perform a one-off intimate solo show on Saturday. Known for her magnetic performances, off-hand charm and pop sensibilities, Gabriella plays music that is all-at-once laid-back, tongue-in-cheek, and peppered with the sweet sounds of ‘60s girl groups.

Community groups across the Northern Rivers and Coffs Coast are being urged to apply for grants of between $2,500 and $10,000 through the Federal Government’s Community Heritage and Icons Grants program.

The grants are available to support community engagement and awareness raising activities that promote places on Australia’s National Heritage List.

Page MP Kevin Hogan said the Northern Rivers and Coffs Coast currently has one national heritage listed site – Gondwana Rainforests of Australia.

‘Overall the 107 places on this prestigious list represent our amazing natural places, our rich Indigenous heritage, and the historic places and stories that reflect our development as a nation,’ Mr Hogan said.

The grants are part of the Coalition Government’s $1.4 million commitment to provide opportunities for local community groups to promote the heritage values and stories of places recognised on Australia’s National Heritage List.

‘Our heritage contributes to our sense of place, community and personal wellbeing, it informs us about where we have come from and who we are, and is fundamental to our national identity,’ Mr Hogan said.

The National Heritage List records our national story and protects places so they continue being part of our shared heritage.

Some of the places on the list are not well known and the Program is designed to help more people engage with these places and understand their importance and values.

The types of activities available for support through the program may include:

  • development of signage, brochures and pamphlets
  • development of web content, smart phone applications or virtual tours
  • development of interpretive heritage trails and walks.

Local community organisations interested in the conservation, promotion, and awareness raising of places on Australia’s National Heritage List are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applications for funding are open until 23 March 2017.

Further information about Community Heritage and Icons Grants, including the application guidelines and application form, is available at www.environment.gov.au/heritage/grants-and-funding/community-heritage-icons-grants/2016-17

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
