Plans have been lodged for the $656,000 redevelopment of the Rainbow Cafe site in Nimbin to replace buildings that burnt down in a fire in 2014.
The development application details how the proponents want to reconstruct the iconic cafe ‘in a way that respects this status and history, and imagines at the same time the continued use of the building as a cafe into the future’.
The plan also involves the erection of a small cottage at the rear of the land to maximise the commercial potential of the development.
A contemporary version of the ‘rainbow’ mural on the previous building will be painted and the new cafe will have seating for 50 customers.
There were 90 seats in the former Rainbow Café & deck outdoor dining area.
The development application states that there is no need for additional on-site parking as the use of the café building does not either the increase floor plan area or use of the previous building on the land.
If approved, demolition of existing buildings is expected to take less than one week.
The development application is currently on display at Lismore City Council. It can be viewed at here.
