The state government is expected to announce later today that it will stump up $50,000 to fund engineering and design reports for a proposed ocean pool at Ballina.

Nationals MLC Ben Franklin will be making the announcement at 2pm at the Ballina Shire Council chambers, along with Ballina mayor David Wright.

Long-term backer of the project, and member of the Ballina Ocean Pool committee, Cr Jeff Johnson, said the expected funding was wonderful news.

‘It’s also great timing because we’ve got two masters students from Southern Cross University who are undertaking community engagement research and they will be surveying residents and businesses over the new three to four weeks,’ Cr Johnson said.

Cr Johnson said the $50,000 represented a ‘tick of approval’ from the state government.

‘We are hoping to have all the design and planning reports finished this year, and to submit a development application to council later in the year,’ Cr Johnson said.

‘We are very thrilled that the state government has shown this level of support.’

Meanwhile, Ballina’s mayor David Wright told Echonetdaily that further announcements regarding shark mitigation measures would also be made today.

More to come.

Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.
