Mullumbimby Tennis Club players Timothy Yeung Packer and Steve Gort have both left the Sawtell tournament as winners.
Tim won the U/12 singles at the Sawtell NSW Junior Clay2017 (April 30), his first Australian ranking tournament.
He backed this up with a win in the U/12 doubles along side Coffs Harbour player Charlie Pade.
‘It has been a very busy Easter period for Tim who came second in a Noosa tournament, third in Coffs Harbour,’ said his dad Steve Packer.
Before travelling to Sawtell he competed in the Sydney Age Championships, a gold-level event.
Tim managed to beat the number one seed in an early round of this tournament but couldn’t capitalise and ended up coming eighth.
But again pairing up with Charlie he was able to come second in the doubles.
“He is playing very good tennis at the moment and training very hard,’ Steve said.
Mullumbimby Tennis club coach Steve Gort also came away with the first place prize money of $400 after winning the men’s open, played on a synthetic surface
It was Gort’s first tournament win in at least four years and was unexpected.
‘I just wanted to play, to have a hit,’ he said.
