One win and two washed-out games leave Byron Bay sitting in third place in the 2018 Coastal League after a wet start to the season.

After cool but clear conditions for round one three weeks ago, local cricketers have endured an abandoned game and last week didn’t get on the park owing to rain.

A win to Byron Bay’s second grade team over the Ballina Bears in the first game leaves them in third spot on the ladder, but on equal 15 competition points with Alstonville and Cudgen.

Playing away at Fripp oval,  Byron had the Bears in a lot of trouble after taking the top order cheaply. Only first drop H Turnbull reached double figures with 22.

But J O’Conner (56no) and M Turnbull (35) in the middle order mounted a charge and took Ballina to a total of 6/151.

Byron started well with openers O Delian scoring 67 and D Wright 25.

The Byron side went on to reach the total with eight overs to spare buoyed by the 40 extras, including 34 wides, conceded by the Ballina side.

In other games from the October 7 round Mullumbimby Brunswick were well beaten by Alstonville after  they were sent in to bat and were bowled out for 104 in 23 overs, posting five ducks on the scorecard.

Alstonville lost just one wicket in the chase and wrapped up the game early.

Lennox Head also got off to a good start beating Tintenbar-East Ballina at home.

Lennox scored 6/213 with M McCormack starting a good day with 50no, supported by T Fisher (35), B Young (31) and B Kernaghan (26no).

The home side then rolled the visitors for 91 as McCormack backed up with a decisive bowling spell earning 4/16 off just seven overs. M Duncan chimed in with 3/21 and J Barnes collected 2/7.

Twilight Returns

Weather permitting the 36th staging of the ever popular Byron Bay Twilight cricket competition will get underway this week.

Last year’s winners the Thomas Noble and Russell cricket team will be keen to defend their champions title.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

Youth crime is increasing – what to do?

There is something strange going on with youth crime in rural and regional Australia. Normally, I treat hysterical rising delinquency claims with a pinch of salt – explicable by an increase in police numbers, or a headline-chasing tabloid, or a right-wing politician.
