Deborah Lilly, Mullumbimby
Thank you Mandy for another brilliant Soapbox (18.10.17) satirising sexual harassment and exposing the exploits of Harvey Weinstein and the mutual support he shares with Woody Allen, another top of the food chain predator.
Have you felt offended, humiliated or intimidated by sexual banter or inappropriate touching? These
feelings are the criteria to assess whether someone has gone over the line. 97 per cent of cases of sexual harassment (SH) are non-physical and making sexually suggestive comments or jokes is the most common form of SH. One in four women has experienced SH in the workplace in the last five years and men’s harassment of other men is on the rise according to knowtheline.humanrights.gov.au. Sexual harassment is a crime in the workplace and examples identifying SH behaviour is on Australian Human Rights Commission website.
The effect of SH on women can be subtle, insidious and devastating, affecting self esteem, productivity, job satisfaction and/or family dynamics. It’s time to speak up. Check the websites, find and/or give support or call 1800RESPECT. Downtrodden ain’t ok.
