Close competition marked the first race of the Tweed Valley Sailing Club’s Summer Race Series on Sunday October 8 when 19 boats took to the water.

Line honours went to father and daughter team John and Saffron Cooke on their Weta Tri beating the first monohull, Kate Yeomans (Laser), by only 10 seconds.

The light conditions suited Kate and she was over a minute ahead of Gary McCrohon with John Hayward seconds behind.

The eight Corsairs included new club member Daniel Sieders on Odin, who led the Corsairs for two laps but was bested on the last  by Peter Skinner on Corsair Epic helmed by Max Hennessy with grandson Caspian Nickless.

The third Corsair across the line was Alison Blatcher with crew Marg Walgers and Andrew Jaggers on Melita III.

There was close racing between the rest of the Corsairs showing that this season’s class championship starting on Sunday October 29 could be anyone’s.

Bill Fenelon and crew Taj Krasna on classic NS14 Tornado probably had the biggest smiles of the day as they got a win in the first NS14 class championship race. It was a tense last leg as they crossed the line only three seconds ahead of last year’s NS14 champions Glenn Slight and Kynan Luescher.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
