If you’re visiting Tweed Shire Council offices at Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads this month, be prepared for an unusual sight – decorated bras of all shapes and sizes strung across the foyers.

Council staff have embraced Breast Cancer Awareness Month by decorating bras in the theme of ‘iconic films and locations of the Tweed’.

Sequins, foliage, ribbons, beads, pirate swords and flowers are just some of the materials used to decorate the bras while paying homage to films with links to the Tweed, such as Muriel’s Wedding, Fern Gully, Mermaids, Aquaman and Pirates of the Caribbean, just to name a few.

Members of the community are invited to join the fun at fundraising community morning teas in the offices on Wednesday (October 25) at Tweed Heads and Thursday (October 26) at Murwillumbah. Both morning teas are at 10am. There will be plenty of goodies baked by the staff for sale to raise funds for Pink Ribbon.

Council’s corporate services director Liz Collyer said that while the friendly competition was great fun, there was a more serious message.

‘It is also a time to remember family, friends and colleagues we have lost and those who have survived breast cancer,’ Ms Collyer said.

‘Once again we have some incredibly creative entries, including our first all-male entry, from some of our engineers who have made the leap from designing culverts to bras.

‘The Cancer Council has made us a VIP partner, given staff’s support for this cause each year and the thousands of dollars they have raised – something we’re very proud of,’ she said.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
