Hundreds of flyers that appear to be from The Greens but are in fact an attack on the party have been placed in local letter boxes by NSW Labor.

The flyers are emblazoned with the words ‘The Greens focus for the NSW election, but inside document some of The Greens’ recent internal disputes, including the recent resignation of Jeremy Buckingham, and claims of bullying and harassment by upper house Greens MP Dawn Walker.

There is no mention of the Labor party or its insignia.

The only indication that this is the source is that the address of the authorizer is NSW Labor’s Sussex Street headquarters.

‘This is a deliberate smear campaign from Labor,’ The Green’s candidate for the seat of Lismore, Sue Higginson said.

‘To all of the people who have received that, I’d just like to say I’m sorry. I’m sorry that this is the way the old parties operate.

‘The Greens do politics differently. We are the party of being positive and the party of hope and change.’

The Labor candidate for Lismore, Janelle Saffin, said she had not seen the flyer when contacted by Echonetdaily.

When asked whether she had been told by her party’s head office that it would be distributed, Ms Saffin said she had to go and would call back.

Echonetdaily is still awaiting a response.

Bexhill resident Geof Webb, who received one of the flyers in his Lismore PO Box, said it was ‘sad that it has come to this’.

‘I’m just really disappointed that the race has become a race to the bottom – where’s the integrity gone?’ Mr Webb asked.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. I was a bit baffled by it at first but but disposed of it the same way I did as the other negative flyers that day, in the bin (recycled of course)! Great work with your positive campaign Sue.

  2. This flyer could have come from anyone.
It looks like the classic ‘fake news’ conservative rubbish.
I would be surprised if the ALP put it out given that they need Sue Higginson’s preferences just as she needs theirs!

  3. One just has to look at the bottom of the flyer to work out who is behind it.

‘Authorised by Jay Suvaal Level 9 377 Sussex Street, Sydney 2000’

Googling either Jay Suvaal OR Level 9 377 Sussex Street, Sydney, will give you the answer.

  4. I’ve checked this week’s mail today – Sat 23rd.
Sure enough Jay Suvaal’s fake advert is the
    ALP’s property & address. I’ve now got 2 copies
of this ‘Junk’. A double shame, Janelle. Don’t
tell me you don’t know better. Are the Green
‘preferences’ that vital? Political lies &
endless scare mongering deceit is in full
play. Maybe we should all start demanding
‘first past the post’. The personas supposed
to be representing the public may then have
to work & walk the talk or resign.

  5. Is anything on the leaflet untrue? I haven’t seen one.

Unfortunately Greens and Labour seem to show more enmity to each other than they do to the conservatives. Each is the bigger threat to their respective voter bases. I found myself similarly disappointed by posters that proclaimed, ‘Labor’s Adani Mine’. Doesn’t give the complete picture either does it?

  6. I thought ‘Labor’s Adani Mine’ poster a bit thick. Still the ALP refuses
to take a ‘yes/no’ stand on any major environmental threat and I do
understand Labor’s need to win Lismore since a Green Ballina win
wouldn’t have occurred to them. Sue copped the insulting ‘flyer’ from
its Labor base – that’s about as sick as it gets – ‘what’s next’? Well,
that’s a matter for the federal mad-hatter’s ‘tea party.’

  7. Labor should have learned years ago that following the conservatives’ practice of running negative campaigns doesn’t work for their voters and potential voters.
I feel they lost this election by continuously naming their opposition in attempts to educate the electorate, probably rather desperate to publicise the Lib/Nat’s shortcomings as the press in this country are now considerably to the right of Attila The Hun. Is The Echo the only remaining unbiased news source in Australia? Seemingly and sadly so.
Ultimately negativity doesn’t win Elections for Labor… now we’re stuck with further destruction of environment, education, health and community for another 4 years.
