In response to Wilf Sprengel’s letter (March 27) asserting that climate change is cyclic and lamenting NAPLAN results in relation to the student strike for climate.
Wilf, take heart, the students who went on strike understand the difference between a normal distribution that is, as a whole, moving towards the right (increasing temperatures) versus focusing on the extremities of the bell curve, which will always be there but are nothing to be guided by.
I think that you can also take heart that the students have been taught to interpret and value the overwhelming scientific consensus regarding an issue and that they are savvy enough to realise that many intelligent, well-meaning adults around them have been groomed into denial or doubt by the strategic 40-year campaign of the climate-denial industry (now a matter of public record).
Thank goodness there are ever-growing numbers of young people who comprehend the urgency of this situation, can see through the ongoing political spin, and have the courage to stand for what they know.
