A group of dedicated activists rallied outside the Optus offices in Lismore recently protesting against the rollout of the fifth generation cellular network (5G) technology that provides broadband access. 5G will eventually replace 4G world-wide.
Many technology users are looking forward to higher speeds but locally, there is a growing contingent of people who are concerned about the health issues surrounding the rollout.
The group say the primary focus of concern is the millimetre-wave radio frequency radiation associated with the 5G spectrum, coupled with the absence of prior safety testing, and the concerns recently raised by numerous scientists.
The protesters who are part of the Stop 5G Northern Rivers NSW group, say they are starting to see the health effects from earlier wireless technology such as 4G and that 5G is much stronger. They also say lab rats exposed to 5G died.
Protester Martin Oliver said that when he put up the signs before the protest started, the first person to the engage was a telecommunications engineer who said that he was on-side with the group’s message and concerns. ‘This was slightly surprising, as you might expect someone in that role to disagree with you,’ said Oliver. ‘In general, some passers-by were paying attention, especially when we were doing chants. A small number of people came up and chatted.’
Mr Oliver said no-one from Optus came out to see what the rally was about. ‘Our main targeted audience was the passing traffic and pedestrians,’ he said.
Gwilym Summers who was at the protest said that the passers-by were curious. ‘Some of them didn’t know what 5G was,’ he said. ‘There are many people saying that it is highly dangerous to human health and the environment. One scientist has said it is the most stupid thing that has ever been done on earth.’
The Stop 5G Northern Rivers NSW group are a community action group raising awareness about 5G health concerns, 5G wireless wifi technology, 5G electromagnetic radiation (EMR).
