Shani Darling, Wilsons Creek
I have several rescued rabbits as pets, which led to caring for a dwarf long-haired lop-ear bunny found at the side of the road. She was so matted that her hind leg, infested with maggots, was stuck to her body. Long-haired rabbits need frequent brushing to avoid this kind of trauma.
The most healthy conditions for a bunny are indoors with a litter tray, bedding, food, and water. An outside play area that keeps predators out and bunnies in. They can live well into their teens this way versus three to five years in a hutch (think caged hens).
Bunnies are fantastic companion animals, but they are not a quick and easy pet and generally not suitable pets for younger kids.
