Gregory Davies, Byron Bay
Council’s decision to award the Butler Street bypass contract was a reckless act of betrayal to the Shire. The decision was made without duty of care to public safety, public interests, and Council’s finances.
Instead of helping Byron Bay’s transport and parking problems it will antagonise, distress, and injure travellers of all modes in the heart of the town in the long-term.
The dozens of unmitigated safety hazards concern me the most. Some were identified in the only EIS in January 2016. Many more have appeared since then owing to significant changes to the project environs; events that would’ve triggered revision of both the bypass route and the EIS if Council had been acting in good faith with goodwill in the public interest.
Councillors have lost the green credentials by approving the unavoidable and unnecessary destruction of critically endangered species.
If the mayor and his deputy believe they have broad public support, please test it in an early election.
