‘Byron’s dead’. That’s the statement that I often hear. Or ‘I never go there anymore it’s lost’ or ‘Byron died years ago’. It always makes me feel a bit sad and defensive. The Northern NSW Local Health District is urging people to watch for measles symptoms after a Byron Bay child was diagnosed with the infectious disease this week.

A health district spokesperson said the child developed symptoms four days after returning from a trip to New Zealand.

Half of the world’s population are unable to access basic healthcare.

The spokesperson said anyone who was in the following locations at the same time as the child should watch out for measles symptoms until September 20:

  • Byron Bay and/or Suffolk Park shopping areas during the day on Sunday September 1 (Fathers’ Day)
  • Harvest Deli & Bakery in Newrybar between about 10am and 11am on September 1
  • Elements Resort and Spa, Byron Bay, between around 5.30pm and 7pm on Sunday 1 September (Father’s Day).

The director of the North Coast Public Health Unit, Paul Corben, said the locations do not pose an ongoing risk.

‘It can take up to 18 days for symptoms to appear following exposure to a person with measles,’ Mr Corben said.

‘Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes and a cough followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body.

‘Anyone who develops symptoms of measles should arrange to see their GP and limit their exposure to others, including patients at the GP clinic.’

Mr Corben encouraged Byron locals to ensure they had received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, which he said provided lifelong protection in 99 out of 100 people who are vaccinated.

‘The measles-mumps-rubella vaccine is safe and effective protection against measles,’ he said.

‘It’s free for anyone born during or after 1966 who hasn’t already had two doses. If you’re unsure whether you’ve had two doses, it’s safe to have another.’

Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air when someone who is infectious with the disease coughs or sneezes.

While the risk of infection is said to be low in fully-vaccinated people, health experts urge anyone who comes into contact with a person with measles to watch for symptoms.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. The world press is strident that we must vaccinate against measles, as dutifully echoed by the Echo. Which reminds me of an earlier revealing article in the Echo, https://www.echo.net.au/2019/05/who-controls-the-world/ which authoritatively states: ’80 per cent of [US] TV news is packaged or prepared by public-relations firms working for governments and corporations.’

When I was a kid everyone had measles and thought little of it. It was a rite of passage. There is much to consider with an open mind before administering the MMR vaccine in particular, as information collated on this website supported by Robert F Kennedy Junior reveals: https://childrenshealthdefense.org/news/countering-false-vaccine-safety-claims/

Robert F Kennedy of course has had plenty of opportunity to question the agenda of the mainstream narrative regarding death’s in his own family.

The more the Main Stream Media pushes an agenda, the more sage it becomes to wonder who and what is behind it. Especially when injected straight into our children’s veins.

    • The sources you site Neal and Garry are counter to an extraordinarily large body of scientific evidence from across the globe.

The same scientific processes that raise our awareness of issues such as human induced climate change

Science, and in particular medicine is a process I personally trust.

I trust doctors just like I trust climate scientists.

I wonder why so many people trust very tenuous and obscure sources of information such as those you have mentioned Neal, rather than the international consensus from doctors and medical researchers around safety and effectiveness of vaccinations. Garry’s source is also splinter and not supported by scientific peers.

The fear around harmless 5G technology that connects us to high speed internet and the many benefits this brings to health, education, commerce and community is another perplexing issue in our community.

How is it that our community can be enlightened in so many ways, while also buying these ludicrous conspiracy theories?

I will trust scientific consensus every time – this leads us to discoveries that have created the world we live in today – we have never experienced longer lifespans, our lives are freer and more people experience access to human rights than at any time in history. Science and democracy combined is a powerful influence on the particular peace, prosperity and health we experience in Australia.

Peer reviewed scientific processes have greatly assisted us to get where we are today

Is it a perfect world? do we have a perfect community? certainly not. But science is not the enemy, and nor are our amazing doctors and medical research community.

To the majority of parents in the community who do vaccinate their children, thank you. To those questioning if they should, please read widely and look for ideas that are agreed upon widely by other medical researchers.

  2. Heard immunity is a myth. Measles is also being spread by vaccinated people. Once an outbreak is discovered. The Authorities and supporting media organisations recommend more people to become vaccinated. Which in turn creates more potential for outbreaks. Tests indicate the strain created from vaccinations is different to that found naturally. All people who agree to be vaccinated are now carriers of the virus. Often multiple strains, such as in the MMR vaccine.

For an enlightened conversation about vaccination, health and autonomy visit:

  3. Please vaccinate your children, mainstream media pushing agenda? No guys it’s world health organisations trying to eradicate infectious diseases.
Don’t read this website or that article before you first understand how science works, read a first year uni textbook to comprehend how investigations only hold water after rigorous peer review, how sample size effects results and how weak correlations should never be used to justify facts. Too much misinformation from Dr obscurity, or medical scientist jack in the box. It’s not VALID science.
Just like 5G it’s perfectly safe yet misinformed individuals cause more harm than good.

  4. I really am amazed by the ignorance of some of the comments. Simple stupidity nothing less . Measles can kill and the encephalitis can cause brain damage.
