Paul Smith, Mullumbimby
As the person authorised by the president of the Mullumbimby RSL Sub Branch to organise the details of Remembrance Day 2019, I was advised late in the evening of 10 November that there was to be a public meeting in the Civic Hall at 11am on Remembrance Day to brief the public on the fires; and I recommended that we postpone the Remembrance Day service until after that meeting. The notices had already been issued when I was informed, so I was not in a position to ask if the meeting could start at 11:30 am instead of 11 am.
I believe that anyone in my position should and would have done the same. The gravity of the emergency at our gates was such that the public interest necessarily took temporal precedence over the century old sacred rite of Remembrance.
