The Mullumbimby Hockey Club hosted a very successful celebration of their 90th anniversary with around 100 people attending the Mullumbimby Ex-Services Club for the party.

Displays of each decade, with newspaper articles and photos were a popular talking point among the crowd as was the Powerpoint presentation of photos from the 1920s through to the current season.

Several past presidents attended and spoke of their time with the club.

All life members: Debbie Cullen, Julie Williams, Mary Schumacher, Pauline and Grant East were present.

1954 champions

The highlight of the evening was the attendance of nine ladies who played for Mullumbimby 65 years ago, in 1954.

The three women’s teams won both minor and major premierships that year. Ruth Slogrove and Val Staff spoke on behalf of past players.

Also shown was an interview with Phyllis Flick, who is 103 years young and lives in Byron Bay. Phyllis and her sister Jean played for Mullumbimby in the 1930s. Her son Geoff and grandson Tony were also present.

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
