Trump is a loose cannon. With one fell swoop of its predator drones the US committed its gravest strategic blunder since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The extralegal execution of senior Iraqi and Iranian commanders by Washington has given the martyred ones glory in death and unified an invigorated alliance between Iraq and Iran.
Trump declared the assassinations were necessary to prevent imminent attacks against US facilities, but clearly they served to provoke an attack – not to prevent it.
This assassination has handed Iran an opportunity to legitimately target US bases. Whereas these US actions have been wholly without legitimacy, the Iranian response was measured and legal. Having clearly misjudged their opponent, team Trump appears crude, callous and incompetent by comparison.
America is an empire in decline, dependent on permanent war. Its resort to brutal, unlawful and strategically disastrous action betrays frustrated impotence. This crime has done nothing to benefit the people of Israel or the US.
