Mick and Deborah Stacey believe love is the answer, (Letters, 22 July). To love and be loved is sublime. To physically and mentally abuse and express hatred to control others is bullying and evil.

We are reminded that the first atomic weapons test was held in 1945.

In 1982, thirty-seven years later, one million people demonstrated in New York Central Park against nuclear weapons and for an end to the cold war arms race. Another petition by ICANW now will not bring nuclear disarmament closer.

The cold war did come to an end, but distrust in territorial ambition in our part of the world indicates we could be involved in an Asian cold war. Hence Australia’s $270 billion defence announcement.

It is not surprising to see the level of hate politics being peddled by foreign influencers and the political ‘factual information’ offered by those who seek to control us and our way of life.

Councils’ stretched staff and funding resources should be employed locally.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
