Janene Jelfs, President, Bangalow CWA

Thank you to Mandy Nolan for her compassionate article outlining the rental stress issues for those in vulnerable housing circumstances in our Shire.

Older women and homelessness is an issue dear to the hearts of the CWA of NSW members. The Bangalow CWA Branch took this issue to the State Conference in 2018 based on the situation in our own regional paradise.

This situation has only deteriorated in subsequent years owing to the circumstances Mandy outlines. The crisis in rental housing must be addressed. Social housing will take a coordinated response including federal, state and local governments, philanthropists, community groups and individual community members.

Byron Shire Council must take leadership in this issue and ensure the Shire does not become the gated community Mandy fears. There is COVID-19 recovery funding available so this is the ideal time for Council to step up. It’s time to end the talk and take action.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
