1,000 Days Later. This was the title of a recent article in The Guardian regarding the status of the Biloela family detained on Christmas Island (now their second Christmas).
Nationwide campaigns have been met with disdain and ignored by the Liberal National Government. This innocent family is now trapped in the Kafkaesque system of Dutton’s Home Affairs Department.
The intent of this cruelty is obvious: to deter refugees and asylum seekers – no matter the cost.
Noted writers have argued a prerequisite for ‘universal’ human rights is citizenship; a point all too evident with the treatment of the Biloela family.
Australia should be striving for a more powerful, inclusive concept of human rights that would prevent this situation occurring in the first place.
