Gareth W R Smith, Palestine Liberation Centre

How can you, in all conscience, assert the ALP’s undying support for the apartheid state of Israel whose litany of egregious crimes against humanity (see B’Tselem and Breaking the Silence, for example) are so carefully ignored.

You must have far more recourse to intelligence about Israel than the average citizen, so ignorance cannot be advanced as an excuse in your case. You must be aware of Israel’s demolitions, which cause immense suffering and homelessness, the daily depredations by armed settlers who even attack Palestinian children en route to school, the arraignment of children before military courts and, of course, the catalogue of injuries and killings by the IDF.

In 2014 during the Great March of Return, Israeli sharpshooters killed at least 2,104 Palestinians, including 1,462 civilians, of whom 495 were children and 253 were women. There were 11,231 injured including 3,436 children and 3,540 women, 10 per cent of whom suffered permanent disability. as a result. How do you and the ALP respond to this data, which totally eclipses the Myanmar casualties?

Byron Friends of Palestine will work to oust Richmond sitting member Justine Elliot and replace her with a candidate of conscience who will not swear unconditional support for Israel’s brutal apartheid regime!

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Gareth W R Smith, I credit you and your followers for trying to alleviate the suffering of the Palestine people since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1949, but good luck doing that when the whole world has failed. What I wont cop is you slagging off at Penny Wong, Justine Elliott and the Labor Party, all of which have not been in Govt. for seven years and would certainly be sympathetic to the Palestine problem. Why don’t you slag off at the current Coalition Govt. for openly supporting Trump’s appalling peace proposal and moving the American embassy to Jerusalem. There will probably never be an acceptable peace deal while the extreme right-wing Netanyahu Govt. is in power, and you have the audacity to attack left leaning Labor politicians, and openly campaign to replace a hardworking MP. like Justine Elliott with some one issue wonder that even if it was successful would achieve absolutely nothing, except make it harder to remove this appalling Coalition Govt., Gareth W R Smith, I think a reality check is in order for you and your followers.

  2. Gareth W R Smith, As a correspondent to the “Guardian” that is the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Australia and not to be confused with “The Guardian” I can only warn the Greens of Byron Bay of your presence perhaps they already know.

I am not sure if your extreme left wing view of the world is even palatable even to them.

  3. I agree with Keith & I also feel that there are problems on both sides of the Netanyahu Gov. &
Palestine. Life is short – hate goes on living long regardless. Why not take word-aim at the
useless current Coalition Gove? Penny Wong & Justine Elliott can’t fix the world’s headaches
though they do more than just try.
