Those in India need our help

S Haslam

In India, thousands are dying needlessly from a lack of basic medical equipment, particularly oxygen concentrators. There is also a need for PPE kits. There are a number of verified fundraising sites to which people can donate directly, but the expatriate community is also hosting fundraisers.

Radhika from Mumbai Masala restaurant in Ballina said she felt both, ‘guilty that our lives here in Australia are going on as normal, and also helpless to help’, as she heard the stories of her friends in hospital but also friends looking fruitlessly for beds in a medical system that is overwhelmed.

She knows of two foundations that, she says, ‘are working really hard on the ground. Amongst other actions they are doing makeshift facilities where people can come and get oxygen. It’s all free, and the people working in the facilities are volunteers, so all of the money raised goes directly to help people.’

Mumbai Masala is hosting a special tasting-menu dinner to raise funds to supply oxygen and medical equipment to those in need. There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by the local Ballina business community. 100 per cent of sales will go directly to @khalsa_aid and @hemkunt_foundation.

Tickets are $80pp. Call 6681 4095 to book. It’s on this Friday, 21 May.

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online.
