Push to create transitional accommodation at Lot 22

Should the Council-owned plot of land in Mullumbimby, known as Lot 22, be used for temporary accommodation for those at risk of homelessness, as a matter of urgency?

Paul Brecht, Evans Head

Peter Dutton, top jailer of poor refugees and kids, and now one very sick one, has spent $50 million of your hard earned to try and deport a family who were living in Biloela Queensland that are now jailed at a detention centre. Why?

John Howard and Phil Ruddock were guilty of being head jailers of anyone that came here on a leaky boat seeking refuge.

Those people were fleeing countries ruled by madmen (remind you of anyone?) that liked killing and persecuting people.

Talk about persecuting people, shame on this regime, shame on Dutton, and shame on ScoMo and the rest of them sitting on their big fat backsides pretending to be representing you all?

Have mercy in your heart Dutton.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. The so-called ‘protecting our borders’ legislation inflicting unspeakable cruelty on refugees is all about whipping up racism to win elections, which has been very effective for the LNP ever since the Tampa and children overboard scandals. They don’t have much else to offer-apart from robo debt and inflicting cruelty on disadvantaged Australians, while allowing billionaires to keep millions of taxpayers’ jobkeeper money they’re not entitled to.

Time voters woke up to this appalling situation and had a little empathy for those who risk everything to get away from the danger in their own countries, The Howard government were so eager to join the US in an unjustified war bombing the hell out of countries some of these people are fleeing from. Is this the way Australians would want their loved ones treated if they were in similar circumstances?

The ALP also needs to find their backbone and start behaving like an ethical and compassionate opposition, condemning this cruelty, and demanding the shocking border laws being used to justify it, be changed. Trying to match the LNP’s cruelty certainly isn’t working for them.

  2. I know who I’d like to put into a leaky boat to float below an activated Mars. As long as
we have scum ruling this country we deserve the dregs of humanity & those who vote
the henchmen in. No land of the ‘free’ here – & Labor’s not much better. Penny Wong,
stand up while there’s still a country left.

  3. Dutton & Co are the ones chucking children overboard while yapping falsehoods
that “There are NO CHILDREN in Detention.” It seams our pollies can’t count any
further than zero when it suits them.

  4. Stefanie, I detect much frustration, I am also getting it from our members. Penny Wong has been very outspoken on the unnecessary incarceration of the Sri Lankan family on Christmas Island, Kristina Keneally actually paid her own way to go and visit them; just what else do you expect the Labor Party to do in opposition. Don’t ever forget it was that lying little opportunist Howard that turned this whole immigration issue into a minefield for the Labor Party, and this happy-clapping evangelistic bullshit artist who is more than happy to milk the issue for what it is worth to stay in power. There is only ever going to be one way to fix all of Australia’s problems and you don’t need me to tell you what that is; Don’t give up on us.

  5. Keith, I take a very wide view here. Just hour’s ago I emailed Richard Marles & Linda Burney
[ALP-ites] regarding what’s starting to look & feel like Robodebt 2. I refer to the new Social
Security Bill Morrison believes the country needs. Naturally it’s another out-of-step, a wink
& nod New Amendments grab – plus an add-on (of what) ‘participation requirements’. The
ALP need to oppose this 2nd grab. Loise says the second word as well. Opposition. There’s
not enough ‘opposition’ coming from Labor. Yes, Penny Wong knows & says what this land
is in need of; most of the Labor women do. We need a leader who can ‘step up’. Penny’s
the only one who can do just that. Think on that – otherwise it’s soak-holes.
