When the point scoring dies down there’s no question that since the British colonial occupiers of Palestine decided to enable a Jewish State in that land that it has been a disaster for the resident Palestinians.

In 1948 the United Nations declared the new State of Israel under defined boundaries stimulated by the horrors of the holocaust in Europe. The new State of Israel defeated attacks from neighbouring Arab states and then set about forcing the removal of the existing non-Jewish Palestinians.

In the years since, Israel has expanded its borders to occupy large tracts of Palestinian lands not originally designated as Israel by the UN agreement. They have imposed discriminatory practices, built large ‘settlements’, demolished the houses of locals, imprisoned and killed many, including innocent women and children. They have denied the democratic rights of inhabitants of the occupied territories while their neighbours, Jewish ‘settlers’, get to vote in Israeli elections and drive on roads designated as out of bounds for Palestinians.

Israel must accept responsibility for rectifying the situation they have created just as Australia must accept responsibility for the impact of colonisation on the original inhabitants of this country.

  1. Jenny, your letter is replete with falsities.
At the time that the British made it possible for the Jewish people to establish a homeland there were no Palestinians, just Arabs with no sense of a national identity.
Your assertion that Israel after 1948 set about forcing the removal of the existing non-Jewish Palestinians is pure pro-Palestinian propaganda. Arabs living in the areas that became Israel fled or were forced out by war. Since that time there are has been no concerted effort to expel so-called ‘Palestinians’ from Israel, rather the percentage of Arab Israelis has been on the increase in the ensuing years. It was the Jews who had to flee persecution and attacks in the Arab countries, who represent the real victims of a genocide, with Arab nations in the Middle East today being almost totally devoid of Jews.
There are such thing as ‘Palestinian’ lands as the so-called Palestinians have never had any sovereignty over the territories they claim. These territories are disputed with Israel have strong claims under international law to these contested areas.
As far as the claim that there are “roads designated as out of bounds for Palestinians” this is another example of blatant propaganda. Please read an article ‘Dispelling the myth of ‘Jews-only roads’ in the West Bank’ from the Irish Examiner (https://www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/yourview/arid-30856339.html).

  2. How can the indigenous people of a country be colonisers in their own land?
The Jewish kingdoms of Israel, Judea and Samaria are the lands of Canaan as described in the Bible and confirmed by archaeological research, artefacts and writings of the region.
The Jewish People are Canaanites as shown genetically and through their language Hebrew, the only living Canaanite language spoken today.
For over a thousand years the Jewish People fought off invaders of their land Israel, Judea and Samaria, but in 637 CE the Arab/Muslim army swept in and physically and culturally colonised the region and made Jews dhimmis – second class citizens in their own land. The Jewish People, against all odds, continued their presence in their land and all through the ages many from the Diaspora made the perilous journey back home to the ‘Holy Land’ – today’s Israel, Judea and Samaria. As prophesied in the Bible, the Children of Israel, the Jewish People indigenous to the land, have now gathered again in their ancestral home, today’s Israel.
