Have you always felt like you have a novel in you, but don’t know where to start? Or have...

This morning NSW Premier said that ‘you have nothing to fear about getting the disease. If you follow the health orders and if you make sure you are vaccinated.’

In one of the biggest instances of misspeaking in the current COVID-19 outbreak, NSW Premier just minutes ago said that residents have ‘nothing to fear about getting the disease if you follow the health orders and get vaccinated.’

These words of comfort came just after she announced yet another record day of COVID-19 positive cases.

‘To 8pm Last night we had 1,431 cases of community transmission, and regrettably, 12 people lost their lives and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones.

‘As I’ve said previously, the best health advice I have, is that we anticipate a peak in cases in the next fortnight. In next fortnight is likely to be our worst in terms of the number of cases.

‘But as I’ve said it’s not the number of cases we need to be focusing on but how many of those cases end up in our intensive care wards or hospitals, and how many people we have vaccinated as quickly as possible.’

Ms Berejiklian then went on to say that as far as COVID and intensive care is concerned she hope people have been listening to the message, especially vulnerable people – being protected and following the health orders.

‘I just want to stress, that you have nothing to fear about getting the disease. If you follow the health orders and if you make sure you are vaccinated, that is the best protection. Stay home as much as possible and get vaccinated.’

  1. Talk about mis-speak. Were there really 14,131 cases today or was it 1,431. Guess I am glad I read 3 papers and listen to the ABC.

  2. There are many people who cannot – on doctors’ orders – take the jab, premier. You
have obviously forgotten ‘the forgotten ones’ while stating “You have Nothing To
Fear About Getting The Disease .”

    • Stefanie
The Premier’s comment is an exaggeration as there remains a rise of infection to vaccinated people but it is much less. The more who are vaccinated the fewer who become infected with Covid-19. That reduces the risk to those who are unable to be vaccinated. Unfortunately there is a pool of people choosing not to be vaccinated and they are the greatest threat to those who cannot get the jab.
In resopnse to Rudra. The repetition “get vaccinated” is needed to encourage people to do so without delay. There are people who want to get vaccinated but not wanting AZ, even though it is a very safe and effective vaccine.

  3. Did she really say that? What a ridiculous statement! This is why politicians aren’t trusted. This is why they’re bloody dangerous. Don’t get me wrong, I’m vaccinated with AZ but I know according to one study I still have a 1 in 3000 chance of dying if I get COVID-19. I think Pfizer is 1 in a thousand or so. A whole lot better than unvaccinated but a solid risk nonetheless. But I’ll still be wearing a mask and be careful about what I do. Will other vaccinated people hear what our Gladys has said and think “nothing to worry about”? FFS.

  4. Why is this misspeaking? What she means is that the people that are dying are unvaccinated. So if you get vaccinated you don’t have to worry about dying if you get COVID. It makes perfect sense.

    • Yes I was thinking the same thing Jon. I must be missing something here in this “misspeaking” headline/allegation from the Echo, in respect of the Premier. Perhaps someone responsible at the Echo (oxymoron alert!) can explain their interpretation of the Premier’s comments as being a “misspeaking” event, because it is not immediately apparent to all of us readers and is not been clearly explained in the body of this story.

  5. Well Public Enemy said it best back in the 80’s. “Don’t believe the hype!” The spin with this pandemic is amazing. It ranges from we will be in a 2 week lockdown – 18 months ago, through to the kids are not affected, to don’t leave your home or you’ll die, back to don’t worry just shoot up the extremely quickly developed untested vax. Has all of Australia forgotten that politicians are liars who never keep election promises and are not to be trusted ever. If you are worried I suggest looking at the WHO stats on their official website. 2.6% death rate globally, with most of those over 60, and no mention of how healthy they are or are not. If you are in an at-risk group, then sure you may have to be careful and fairly concerned. Has anyone heard anything about Sweeden (I think it was Sweeden that tried a different approach) lately? My guess is they must be doing ok, since they are not in the news. The media driven fear mongering has gone next level with this one. It’s no wonder there are so many conspiracy theories out there, considering how much mis-information and contradictory information flows out of our politicians mouths.

    • Sweden’s population is a little over 10 million, they’ve had
1,130,525 cases and suffered 14,651 deaths. Currently over 1400 cases per day.
Sweden has approximately 10 times as many COVID-19 deaths per capita as its Nordic neighbours, and it’s economy hasn’t fared much better. The Lancet is extremely concerned about the number of deaths and how Sweden’s lack of action has led to infection spreads in surrounding countries. ‘Sweeden’ is not a positive example.

      • So death rate based on Wanderer’s numbers in Sweden is approx. 0.15% of their population and 1.3% of “known” cases (remember many are asymptomatic) and you say the Lancet is “concerned”?

The Lancet’s current team in charge showed their true colours early in the pandemic when they published a dodgy report on Hydroxychloroquine that they had to retract because… err it was wrong.

Positive examples are really in the eyes of the beholder when discussing the once very credible Lancet.

        • You conveniently forget about the spread to other countries which has caused many more deaths, long Covid and that the dead are people of value who had lives to lead. Also the economic and sociological impacts on communities.
The Lancet remains a highly regarded and ethical professional journal.

  6. Typical Berejiklian, she DOESN”T ever LISTEN, she just SPEAKS and even when she speaks she doesn’t speak TO the people, she speaks AT the people! She apparently has appointed herself as Head Prefect of the Premier Class and just wants to tell all other leaders what they should do, she appaently is an authority on EVERYTHING! She must be challenged and brought to account, the Parliament needs to be sitting if NSW really is a democracy. Someone please save us! Terry

  7. WTF >>>>> Gladys the Koala Killer is incapable of Straight Speakin. Where is Shaun Micallef when we need him ? Don’t be afraid of the Delta variant …just follow the rules says Gladys. But the rules keep changing each day & so does the spin. Front line workers still can’t get the vaccine, MOST people in NSW HAVEN’T had the second shot & Gladys is content with her incompetence to see folks die unnecessarily? Don’t get me started on the appalling lack of policy & procedure for First Nations communities. Are you telling those citizens NOT TO BE AFRAID Gladys ? Yes you obviously are & that is immoral and unacceptable. Bill Shorten said it all …”This is a shit show” unquote.

  8. After pleading with her citizens to do the right thing (rather than instituting timely health regulations) Gladys switched overnight after acknowledging what a huge wake-up call the 600+ day was. Concentrating on numbers when her mismanagement meant they could only get worse was not good politics. The whole LNP had to rebrand massive failure as triumphant success.

Gladys’s pressers are very carefully managed these days. She starts with vaccination numbers and alludes to the case and death numbers so incidentally that they’re easy to miss. She leaves the details of each death to the CHO and severely curtails question time which she further compromises with a Gatling gun of words and repetition.

I think though that she has taken to extremes that old maxim that the best form of defence is attack. For those who can still bear to listen and watch, her smiles and laughter look more like a homecoming reception than information dissemination and accountability in a crisis.

Her triumphalism and lecturing of Victoria and the ACT, after delivering their populations such heartache, offends decency.

Our instincts and common sense tell us that whatever success our vaccination drive would have in reducing the worst impacts of this pandemic, the lower infection starting point the better. Yes there are people who have been frightened to death by the federal government’s failure to procure a range of vaccines at the same time as virtually trashing the one available and saying “it’s not a race”.

There are people who have only just become eligible for vaccination and who face a time
lapse to full vaccination. There are young cohorts who will be administered the MRNA alternatives only – by regulation – but who have their first appointments in Oct or even Nov.

No doubt the charade and Orwellian pivots have the desired effect on some. I wonder for how many though the reaction is sheer disgust. I’d totally support the Echo taking Gladys to task on this “nothing to fear” routine. It’s part of an unconscionable political spin and failure to take responsibility.

  9. Get vaccinated and follow the health orders; can’t be any clearer than that. Unfortunately this will still be the case for along time yet. The Doherty Institute modelling, which State and Federal governments are using, clearly states that vaccination alone is not enough. We will still need to follow public health directives for a long time yet, including wearing masks, if we want to get on top of COVID. Not doing so risks going down the same path as Israel and the UK. The Governments ‘just get vaccinated and everything will be OK” line is simplistic and wrong.

  10. Hi Peter… yes, I am aware of the Prem’s exaggerations – they are many & usually
uncalled for. I feel a new script-writer wouldn’t go amiss. None of us appreciate
being ‘talked at’ & treated like scum. NB – the elections can’t be called fast enough
    for most.
