State of destruction

Tasmanians go to the polls next weekend, in an early election brought on by Liberal Premier Jeremy Rockcliff, whose party has fractured during its ten years in office but is currently warning voters not to elect a Labor minority government, which he's been calling a 'Coalition of Chaos'.

While Gladys has left the building and we have a new religious fanatic in the top job, things are looking very grim in the state of NSW. Apart from handing out licences for gas mining, the government is allowing logging in koala habitat and burning wood, instead of /as well as coal, to produce electricity, which is even more polluting.

I heard a rumour that they want to burn industrial waste now as well. Not sure if everybody knows, we are turning beautiful old growth trees into woodchips and exporting them to Japan and Korea to be burned for electricity, 60,000 tonnes per ship. What madness! Where is the appreciation for our amazing and unique forests?

Ever seen a photo of a logged site, after Forestry Corp has finished there and burned the leftovers? All the ashes and topsoil are left to be washed into the river or creek with the next rain, impacting on all life in the water.

While our employees – our pollies – seem to be favouring big industries and not caring for people and country, it is up to us to stand up and speak up. It’s time to fight for our forests on a keyboard (writing to our politicians), on the street, and most importantly in the forest.

It seems that after we had the devastating bushfires 2019/20, there has been little study done to assess wildlife and forests. The North East Forest Alliance (nefa.org.au) is taking the government to court and needs your support right now. 21 October will be a global day of protest against burning wood for electricity (called ‘biofuel’) and against the industry being financially supported by your tax dollars. Please, connect to your local environment centre, the NEFA website to inform yourself and take action! We ARE the ones who can stop this madness now! #bigbadbiomass
