With New South Wales finally ‘free’, the expected rise in COVID-19 case numbers is starting to emerge.

According to the Northern New South Wales Local Health District, there are currently no Covid-positive patients in hospital in Northern New South Wales, and no cases in the area have been identified as the Omicron variant.

The last reported active case number locations are:

• Byron 201
• Ballina 42

• Tweed 18
• Clarence Valley 2
• Richmond Valley 2

The Byron LGA is where the lion’s share of the cases are – those reported cases have been linked with No Bones, Casa Luna, Woody’s Night Club and SAE in Byron Bay, Mullumbimby High school as well as cases linked to the Coorabell Hall.

  1. The more you try to kill the Kung Flu with vaccines the more it will mutate into variants to survive !

Only Big Pharma benefits by keeping the hype up !

    • The opposite is true, according to Dr Meru Sheel, a senior research fellow at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University. Writing in The Guardian, Dr Sheel says, ‘Sometimes during this process of copying in non-immune persons, it may introduce an “error” or mutation, and at times these mutations can offer competitive advantage to the viruses to spread from one non-immune person to another. But if a person is already immune (say from vaccination), then the virus cannot spread between people, preventing the emergence of new variants’

      • So one key point Simon, the virus still spreads between people that are vaccinated. Also a virus is always looking for a better way to survive and multiply in its host, so it will attempt to move around or away from what’s attacking it, eg; a vaccine. And if that vaccine is not very effective, then guess what, the virus manages this through mutations. Don’t believe the hype, there’s a lot of lies being told and information omitted.

        • Except, Over it, you have been a victim of the lies being told and information omitted that you are warning us about.
The vaccine does not attack the virus … the vaccine teaches your immune system how to fight off the virus then withdraws . There is probably no trace of the vaccine left in your body after a couple of weeks.
So, a vaccine that doesn’t linger in your system or attack a virus will have nothing to do with the virus mutating.

    • Except that even before vaccination programs started, new more infectious variants were emerging. They tended to emerge in populations where the infection levels were rampant. The more the virus is replicating (determined by the number of infected individuals and the severity of those infections) the more opportunity there is for changes favourable to the virus to emerge.

    • Not only your dreaded ” big pharma ” benefit , all of the magical “alternative medicine ” spruikers with their multivitamins , and snake oil are doing exceptionally well too . How interesting they are never put under the spotlight . Oh and let’s not forget horse worming muck and chloroquine .

  2. The scientist is writing in The Guardian who receive large donations from guess who ? BILL GATES who owns more Big Pharma than anyone !!!

    • Bill Gates probably owns more of just about everything than anyone – he’s the fourth richest man in the world (dropped from second recently). I wouldn’t find this surprising.

What I’d need to be convinced of though is that a man who gives away millions to charity, and has been involved in endeavours to make a wide range of vaccines available to the third world, would need/want to bolster his personal fortune via a campaign to:
      Poison the world population
Microchip us all (a very small chip that goes in via that fine needle!)
      Introduce a world-wide dictatorship
      Turn us into lizards
      ?
      ?
      ?

I have heard a version of this theory before when someone told me earnestly that Pfizer is owned almost entirely by Bill Gates and Bill Clinton via a corporation they owned. A little dubious I googled some info on said corporation. It was a finance/investment group that – looking at Pfizer’s share registry – had about a 6% holding. Of the finance group itself I could not find either gentleman on the list of major shareholders.

The Guardian was probably one of several publications that reported Dr Sheel’s statements and similar material will emerge from a range of professors around the globe. It’s hardly new – Darwin basically said this in 1859.

  3. We are now a month into Omicron, and one death *attributed* to it – GLOBALLY! (And multiple sources are now reporting it wasan elderly person with multiple comorbidities, and was incidentally found to be positive only after being admitted for other reasons.)

    One death…in a month…on the whole planet.
And there are people calling for lockdowns to be reinstated, as I write this.
    Let that sink in, folks.

Yes, Delta is still out there. And the sooner Omicron replaces it, the better.
This world has truly gone mad.

    • I certainly hope you’re right M, but it pays to avoid preemption.

      forbes.com has reported:
“ While the jury’s still out on how virulent the Omicron variant may be, it is proving that it can hospitalize and kill people, which is not what the common cold does. Today, the U.K. Health Security Agency reported that there have already been seven deaths and 85 hospitalizations related to the Omicron variant in the U.K. as of December 16.”

There are other reasons for caution:
There are always lag times between infections, hospitalisations and deaths
The WHO warns that many countries do not disaggregate their SARS CoV 2 figures for variant and many countries lack the capacity and resourcing for widespread genomic sequencing.

I don’t know who exactly is calling for lockdowns to be reinstated – apart from the Netherlands which has implemented one – but I can see where the AMA and some epidemiologists are coming from when they suggest that when case numbers have gone from around 500 to 2,500 in a week it may not be quite the time for the NSW government to shed the last remaining safeguards particularly masks.

Letting ideology trump health and abandoning the population of NSW to the virus is some of the rhetoric used. But what’s new for the right wing dominant NSW coalition?

      • Seven deaths “related to” is, as we know, not the same as “seven deaths from.” It has also been noted that the majority of hospitalizationsi in the UK with Omicron thus far are INCIDENTAL (as in, these peaople were hospitalized for other reasons, and then tested positive for Omicron once there.)
Omicron is already the dominant strain in the UK.

I never mentioned political ideology or brought it into the discussion, Liz. You did.
I agree that political ideology should never trump science, nor should the rhetoric surrounding health policy be politicised.
You specifically state, “But what’s new for the right wing dominant NSW coalition?”
It seems to me you are effectively illustrating your own point – though perhaps not the way you intended.

        • The omicron variant seems predicted to become the dominant strain everywhere, M but given its R number this can happen in a very short period of time, (remember the old illustration that if water lilies double every day it will take one day for the pond to go from half covered to fully covered). It’s thought at present that infections of Omicron are doubling every two to three days.

It’s the world’s experts, not me, telling us that we haven’t had the data yet to determine the impact on our health systems. IF the Omicron variant causes less severe disease and death, it is likely it will still create problems in a percentage (albeit a reduced percentage). With numbers so greatly increased by the R number, it doesn’t take a huge percentage to cause chaos in our hospitals.

Anyone ever thought that our front-line health workers deserve a break after two years?

I’m not accusing you of introducing the topic of political ideology, I’m quite unashamed to own that one. It is our local experts making the references to political ideology and these views of the situation are coming from our most respected sources.

Comments like “There’s only so much governments can do” and “it’s time for everyone to take personal responsibility”, seem impressive but a public health response requires quite the reverse philosophy. One person’s view of their personal responsibility affects all of us. We are not all qualified to judge these matters and, as has always been the case in this pandemic that’s far from over, it’s the science that should lead the decisions. Just how much influence is Kerry Chant having right now do you reckon?

It’s doubtful our Premier’s spruiking is even motivated by the economy as people are already voting with their feet because they don’t feel safe. It has to be an example of extreme right wing libertarianism to plough ahead with plans regardless of their unknown consequences in an emerging global situation.

For all those who love social media I’d suggest it’s well worth having a look at a video made by, Dan Suan | MBBS FRACP FRCPA PhD, Clinical Immunologist and Immunopathologist. @DanSuan2.
His early remarks include the comment that it’s important for Science to admit when it doesn’t know. I’d suggest it’s also the obligation of us amateurs to admit when we just don’t know and not contribute to priming the population for discontent if the science tells us certain measures are/will be required.
