I just read Eve Jeffery’s article on ‘need’ and ‘want’ and I agree with her. I’m not a shopper but I do get a lot of things together for people at Christmas.
Sitting in my loungeroom a week or so ago I looked at the timber coffee table and stool that my son made at Mullum High – wood cut down for human consumption (FHC) – and the glass jars and bowls (sand mixed FHC) and the brass candle holders (mined FHC).
I’ve been aware of this stuff for a long time but finally stopped suppressing it and let it come to the front of my mind. I looked around the room and felt quite shocked by the extent of it – from light fittings, synthetic curtains, sliding glass doors, carpet, picture frames and the mined brick walls. So much in just one small room. We humans are supreme parasites really.
If we didn’t buy heaps of cheap crap (need, want) from overseas think of the reduction in pollution and if I didn’t drink wine I’d probably cry a lot for the innocent planet that we have fucked up.
