Flood warning – Wilsons River.

Minor flood warnings have been put out for the Wilsons River, Orara River, Bellinger and Kalang Rivers from Thursday says the NSW State Emergency Services (SES)

‘A trough over New South Wales’ west is drawing humid conditions over the Northeast of the state. This is expected to cause thunderstorms and rain on Wednesday and Thursday,’ said an SES spokesperson.

‘Catchments likely to be affected by flooding are currently very wet following weeks of storms and wet conditions. High tides are also expected along parts of the New South Wales Coast which may exacerbate riverine flooding.

‘The weather system may cause flooding for the catchments listed below for Thursday and Friday as the weather system moves east.’

What you need to do

People in areas likely to be impacted by flooding should consider:

  • Refraining from driving or walking through flood water
  • Road closures and flood isolation may impact on work, family and educational commitments
  • Monitoring emergency warnings and severe weather updates on local ABC radio, NSW
  • If your property is at risk of inundation, please raise moveable items, such as furniture, as high as possible onto benches or tables, placing electrical items on top
  • If you are advised by an emergency services officer to evacuate, please do so
  • Securing outside belongings and before leaving; turn off the power, water and take essential medicines and clothes with you
  • Farmers should move machinery, livestock, pumps, and fodder to flood free ground

For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW State Emergency Service on 132 500. In life threatening situations call triple zero (000) immediately.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. If only there was somewhere for all that water to go so you could use it during drought times. Somewhere the fish and birds could play in it while it is being stored.

  2. According to Bundjalung history (as related top me by numerous elders), Lismore and its catchments never seriously flooded before whitefella cut down all the trees.

What we need isn’t more soil, but (many!) more trees that soak up the water to keep the soil unsaturated and to minimise silting up of the rivers and streams.

      • Don’t let facts get in the way a good story , or “Bundjalung history”
But of course denuding the land and subsequent erosion of soil and leaf-litter contributes greatly to increased flooding, as does the cemented and paved areas of suburbia, which are in some cases surrounded by flood walls, which increase the height of floods outside the ‘protected’ compound.
The natural environment is always more user-friendly.
        Cheers ,G”)
