As part of Clean-Up Australia Day on March 6 residents will be out to tackle rubbish and waste in Mullumbimby. Event coordinator, Bronwyn Morris said vollies will meet at Mullum Co-op from 8am. ‘From here, we will collect our bags, register and be briefed. You can then choose an area you would like to clean up.’
Ms Morris said this is the second year she has coordinated the event and she feels it’s important to participate in events like this. ‘I think it’s important because it engenders community. It makes people think about litter. It also makes people look more closely at litter, and what other people are throwing away and the impact it’s having on the community.
‘Another important reason to participate is that the day provides an opportunity to meet other locals who are also concerned about waste and litter reduction.
‘We’re trying to make it a bigger event this year than it was last year.
Ms Morris said there was a really positive repose to last year’s clean-up. ‘It was really good. We had some school students last year because I was able to go and talk to them face to face beforehand. This year, because of COVID, it has limited the exposure a bit.’
Trying to protect the environment
Ms Morris said she has always been interested in trying to protect the environment. ‘I’m from Brisbane, but we lived in Manly for a few years, and I got involved in cleaning the beaches there.
‘I just see the impact that litter has had on the waterways on our just general community and on wildlife. It’s a worthwhile thing to be involved in Clean-Up Australia – to galvanize that community and that’s what I’m interested in doing.’
NE Waste will also be there on the day to answer questions.
