On Sunday morning, I woke up feeling tremendously buoyed by the surprise election result. I fancied I could feel the sun shining, even above the dense grey rain-clouds covering the sky. For decades, survey researchers have claimed that the Australian public is considerably more enlightened in its attitudes than the Australian government. Finally, we have had an election result that seems to give credence to this idea.
Perhaps we can follow this up by changing the electoral system, so that it more fairly represents the values of the Australian people. Proportional representation perhaps? How about moving the voting age to 16 years to allow some of the larger stakeholders more say in their future?
