The Byron Bay Red Devils premiership rugby league side won their qualifying final at home against Evans Head 32–30, last Sunday.
The win backed up the previous week’s effort when the Red Devils powered home 38–24 against the Cudgen Hornets. That win put them in third place on the competition ladder and gave them the home final.
Never out of contention
In the hard-fought and competitive final the Bombers were never out of contention until the final minute. In the end Byron finished with six tries to five, with the scorers including Michael Thomas, Akariva Durusolo, Daniel Gibson and Connor Wilson. Captain coach Todd Carney kicked four conversions.
In a quirk of the draw the teams will play again this Sunday at Red Devil Park in the competition’s minor semi-final. All the action starts from 3pm.
Bilambil and Murwillumbah both had wins last weekend and will contest the major semi in Murwillumbah.
