Woman charged following house fire – Murwillumbah

A woman will face court today charged following a house fire in Murwillumbah.

I need to reply to the ignorant smears appearing in last week’s Echo about Julian Assange.

The US has done a good job of demonising him, bribing false witnesses, and giving a loan of $24 million to Ecuador to extract him from their embassy, but many people now, especially those who choose to educate themselves outside of the Murdoch media, will know that Julian Assange is our Australian hero, and by revealing their crimes to the world, is suffering the revenge of the criminal US empire.

Our hope is that Anthony Albanese will have the decency and integrity to demand his release and to join with so many other countries in honouring this courageous man. There will be a motion put to the Council this week on the subject of supporting Julian.

His children need their dad home for Christmas and we need a country that has its own voice!

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. While i support the right of citizens to uncover and the misdeeds of Governments as Assange facilitated, in no way could this person be described as courageous. At no point in Julian Assange’s life has he ever done anything that could be described as community beneficial, its also not his first run in with the law. In his early days he spent his time transmitting information on how to hack into corporations and government departments. He was part of a group that also sought to circumvent telecommunications systems to avoid paying for international phone calls etc. The modern day version of the same personality type was responsible for the recent Optus and Medibank attacks. For sure, support the move to repatriate him to Australian shores and avoid the apparent vast punitive over-reach the US has enacted, but do not make the mistake of eulogising Julian and making him out to be some kind of saint, he is not and never has been.

    • FYI
      Community service by Julian Assange

1).As a young father in the early 1990s Julian Assange donated his prodigious computer skills to the Victoria police in two investigations into online child pornography. This was in a voluntary capacity & he recieved no payment for his work.

      2) Julian also set up ‘ Suburbia’ one of Australias first internet providers and provided it free to community groups.

He also visited community groups & taught them how to use it.

      3) Julian co-wrote The Rubber Hose encryption which protected against torture in brutal regimes .

      4) He was also a founding member of The Courage Foundation which raises legal defence funds for whistleblowers globally & teaches journalists how to protect their sources.

    • Exactly. What Manning did to Australians, and Assange is alleged to have assisted with, is essentially the same as what the Medibank hackers have done: they both released Australians’ private information that they had no right to access. None of the Medibank information related to war crimes and nor dud the Australian Wikileak material we had shared with the US.
We have a right to have our confidential information protected, whether it’s our health records or the work if our diplomats, and we should expect government to pursue those who breach our confidential information.
And I find it extraordinary to have a country putting up the case for Assange’s extradition describes as ” demonising “. I wonder if the Medibank criminal(s) are arrested overseas would we describe rhe Australian government as “demonising” them by putting forward the case for their extradition?

      • Essentially the same as medibank hackers? There was not hacking. Manning did not hack and did not need to. Assange published true info in the public interest just as good journalists routinely do. The docs, all of which actually does not fit the US’s own criteria for classification, over classification is a kind of cancer which only the truth can counter. Just read the UN Rapporteur on Torture NIls Melzers book, The Trial of Julian and Assange, for a download of the facts and how the political persecution of a publisher effects you.

  2. Well said Trish! Anyone who takes the time to read the book by former UN Special Rappertor on Torture Nils Melzer “The Trial Of Julian Assange’ will in a few hours be shocked to learn how the empire has used a carefully orchestrated strategy of lies and smear to undermine Julian and Wikileaks work. Lies upon lies to cover up their war crimes and corruption – that Julian revealed.

We are currently making a documentary to expose this.

  3. Interesting how wild the press becomes with the theft of Medi Care data yet the master thief that ducks and weaves from the authorities Mr Assange is not taken to task ?Send him to USA for processing .

    • Julian didn’t steal data, he published data that was leaked by 3rd parties – something the media do every other day.

It gets lost on the general public (and obviously Ted) that it was the authorities behaving illegally. Sadly, that is not typically reported in the media, if it was Ted et al might believe it.

Supporting Julian is supporting freedom, not supporting Julian helps the continuation of conflicts and war and the industry and lobbyists that drive it.

    • Dear Ted. If you want to write on this subject with any authority then I suggest read UN Rapporteur on Torture Prof Nils Melzer’s book, The Trial of Julian Assange, it is the definitve record. Despite the verocity of its claims and Melzer’s significant respected reputation no critics of his position have even attempted to counter his actual claims and facts. If you do not care enough to get informed then perhaps you could stop promoting your uniformed opinion on matters which the future of demcoracy depend on.

  4. Oh dear Trish, most people with a fully functioning brain don’t take the Murdock Media seriously, we listen to the mainstream media that in general has covered the Julian Assange saga quite impartially, you should watch it more instead of some of the rubbish that’s posted on the internet. As far as Albo goes, if he has any sense he should stay out of it and devote his time to issues in the National interest, not trying to a get bail jumping conman off the hook.

  5. The most famous Egyptian International journalists talked hundreds of thousands of people and asked the freedom for ،”julian assange”.

The name of the Egyptian journalists who defend “julian assange” are ” lotfy zakaria”, “ahmed ibrahim” and ” mohamed abdel hameed”.

  6. Facts
In 2017 Wikileaks warned the world that the CIA had lost control of most of its hacking arsenal which was circulating freely & available to rival states, cyber criminals & teenage hackers.

The CIA had kept this dangerous loss to themselves & not warned other nations, companies, organizations or the public.

Wikileaks described the hacking tools & what they could do but did not publish the codes.

They did however offer assistance to companies to secure their data.

Anyone can read about the CIA losing its hacking arsenal at WikiLeaks.org.

You can also read about it by typing in both #Vault7 into Twitter.

Its really quite scary what the CIA hacking tools can do . Its even scarier to know they lost control of them & in whose hands they maybe.

As a result of @Wikileaks #Vault7 publication the embarrassed former CIA Director Mike Pompeo plotted to assassinate Wikileaks editor Julian Assange.

  7. Assange has been indicted for assisting Manning leak large quantities of materials, including Australian. None of the Australian materials he leaked had anything to do with our authorities acting illegally . Assange had no more business helping publish our material than the Medibank hackers had publishing Australian’s personal data. Stealing and revealing others’ private information, including governments’ private information , and helping others do that, is a crime in most countries. Assange is not concerned because he did not break the US laws and is being unfairly tried ; he is concerned because he will be tried by a US court and it will they will find that he did break the US law.
