A seasoned bard

Guy Kachel had an idyllic entry to the world of music. Born in Tamworth, he was raised on the banks of the Peel River. The landscape was a fertile ground for his imagination. Seeing this rustic world change, as Tamworth developed into an inland city and friends grew to sometimes troubled adulthoods, provided insights for the artistry that later powered his career as a performer.

A series of new half-size multi-purpose sports courts could be built across the Ballina shire after councillors at a recent meeting agreed to receive a report on options.

The vote at last month’s ordinary meeting was a unanimous response in favour of Councillor Eva Ramsey’s motion, seconded by Cr Stephen McCarthy.

The council has agreed to explore options for basketball, handball and multi-use courts as well as outdoor volley ball courts throughout the shire.

It’s unclear what sort of budget would be required for the project or how it would be funded.

Cr Ramsey’s motion called for the courts ‘to provide low maintenance, free, facilities to encourage higher active outdoor participation by children, youth and adults’.

Lennox Head, Skennars Head, Ballina, Alstonville and Wardell are included in the list of sites to be examined for the courts.

The full list is as follows:

Fitzroy Park, Wardell
Williams Reserve, Lennox Head
Caloola Road, Lennox Head (EPIQ Estate)

Spoonbill Reserve, Skennars Head
Ballina Heights Sports Fields
Lumley Park, Alstonville
Chickiba Reserve, Ballina
Kingsford Smith Reserve, Ballina

Mayor Sharon Cadallader and Cr Jeff Johnson were absent from the meeting.
