Friday March 3rd is Global School Strike day. I sincerely hope for a huge turnout locally. If you are a parent or a teacher please don’t deprive your kids of this remarkable and crucial chance.

This strike is going to go down in history. It is a real opportunity for them to exert some influence on the democratic process in this country and to express solidarity world-wide. And they have a real need. Their future is genuinely at grave risk, very specifically from the developing global climate chaos, which has been well demonstrated here in Lismore and along the North Coast of NSW. Climate chaos effects in less advantaged countries are likely to cause large-scale disruptions in complex ways, and here also there are increasing levels of inequality to contend with, and a decline of public services.

These ‘kids’ either have just gained the vote, or soon will, and if they don’t see it in reach, they certainly have older siblings as well as parents who I hope will take notice of their concerns. Strike action is a very valid and effective form of non-violent resistance, and a great way to express needs simply by non-cooperation. I for one totally support the Global School Strike and stand in admiration of all school-age participants. I hope they are not put in a position of defiance unnecessarily, but more power to them, either way.

Daniel Berg, Lismore

  1. How would schools react to the students protesting migration, or vax mandates, or permissive abortion laws? They should react the same way for this or loose their public funding.

  2. The pollies should be in the school classrooms, ‘Learning’ whilst our young climate heroes are in Parliament House making the required laws to protect their future.
