In his apologia for Israel, what Danny Wakil failed to mention about Israel’s formation is significant.

From his description you’d think the founding of Israel was a peaceful transition. There was no mention of the ethnic cleansing of thousands of Palestinian villages; no mention, for example, of the Massacre of Tantura where several mass graves of Palestinians have been found recently. Instead, only whitewashed history.

The fact that Israel is now an apartheid state was conveniently ignored in his references to Israel’s Arab citizens. As well, he ignores the illegal detention of thousands of Palestinians in Israeli prisons. Nor was there any reference to the devastating deprivation forced on Palestinians by the illegal Israeli blockade of Gaza. The illegal settlement of the West Bank by Israeli citizens was likewise forgotten. The Geneva Conventions, of which Israel is a signatory, specifically prohibit an occupier state from settling its citizens on occupied lands.  Every settlement and every settler in the West Bank is illegal under international law. Through these settlements Israel is still stealing land from the Palestinians. The ethnic cleansing continues.

Israel is a criminal state. It commits thousands of human rights abuses every day and no amount of Danny Wakil’s blandishments can alter this reality. He should stop deluding himself and face the facts.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Warren Kennedy,
I’m assuming you have never set foot in Israel, the Palestinian Territories, or Gaza. Otherwise you would not find it in your heart to write with such ignorance. Would you care to back up your lies with actual fact? One example of apartheid in Israel? Any proof that the blockade of Gaza has not resulted in the preservation of countless innocent, Jewish Israeli, Arab Israeli, Druze Israeli, Bedouin Israeli, Bahai Israeli lives. One example of inequality or a lack of equal opportunity for any non-Jewish Israeli citizens? Regarding the graves in Tantura, these are still being investigated. Every nation on Earth has committed atrocities, especially during conflict. The Australian massacre of Aboriginal peoples, was routine until relatively recent times. The difference is that unlike, Japan, Australia, the US, Bosnia, Russia, China and many more, Israel actually uncovers and investigates such killings. If and when proven, the perpetrators are brought to justice, if they are still alive. This cannot be said for any other Nation, except Germany. The terrorist, corrupt leaders of Gaza, Hamas, murder innocent Israelis without impunity. In fact, it is their declared goal to murder all Israelis. Your last paragraph astounds me. Not only is it untrue, it reveals your baseless hatred. Why don’t you take a trip one day soon. Visit Israel. The 12th happiest Nation on Earth. See what a free democratic society looks like. Then pop down to Gaza if you dare.

    • You ignore the genocide being carried out by the Zionists against the Palestine peoples. Again, you ignore the facts by stating that Israel is a free democratic society!!!

  2. Just because every nation has their own massacre is not an excuse. I’m not sure about freedom but I see people try to protect it from proposed law changes. The only issue I have is the concept that any criticisms of Israel is deemed anti emetic. On can criticise a country for its policies, eg Zionism, but that is not being rascist. One only has to look at how the courts their justify the eviction of Palestinians from their home and support the militant settlers who chant”burn arabs” etc. I suppose depends on which side of the wall is the 12th happiest country.

  3. “The difference is that unlike, Japan, Australia, the US, Bosnia, Russia, China and many more, Israel actually ” from it’s inception which includes it’s first action as a state, which was to commit genocide of the tribal real owners of their land and continues to this day. This is truly THE evil empire and doesn’t deserve to exist.
    Cheers, G”)
