Australians have just voted for the biggest political ‘flop’ of all time. Unfortunately for our PM, Anthony Albanese who chose to put himself up as the face of the ‘Yes’ vote for the Voice referendum fiasco, he lost both the majority vote and every single seven state votes.
Past president of the Labor Party, Warren Mundine the face of the ‘No’ vote, beat Albo (who now faces political doom) for promising a ‘miracle’ and failing to deliver it.
A year ago, the Voice campaign started with a 69 per cent ‘Yes’ opinion poll, and Albo jumped on the train. That polled vote thereafter declined every month for 12 months to finish up on polling day at about 41 per cent.
In the face of the falling polls, voters’ frustration from the lack of detail, the PM’s political strategy was to defy gravity and bluster on in ‘kamikaze’ style, insisting that the details would be sorted out after the vote!
The PM’s hands are now tied. He cannot legislate another version of the Voice, as that would display even more arrogance and political stupidity and go against Australia’s democracy, under our Constitution, in which voters are the final decision makers.
Albo’s only recourse now is to try and ‘hide’ and have others in the ALP go into the media and blame Donald Trump-style tactics beat them, fake news, disinformation and all the rest.
Both major parties are not going to come out well over this. Albo has created his own unique class of Labor Teals who don’t want to be treated like idiots. And the voting shows all the Liberal seats lost at the last election supported the ‘Yes’ vote so they are not likely to wish to return to the Peter Dutton Liberal fold.
The only possible winners in this situation will mainly be the Teals and Greens.
