A childcare centre for up to 109 children will be built opposite Terranora Public School, under plans approved by Tweed Shire Council last week.

The $4,217,448 centre, to be owned by GGBSC Properties One Pty Ltd, will be located at 647 Terranora Road, Terranora.

The centre will provide for 109 child care places, employ 19 staff, and include 35 parking spaces.

It will be open from 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday.

The site is currently vacant and the neighbouring land is being used for residential purposes.

The centre will include six childcare rooms spread across two buildings, as well as two sleep rooms, a kitchen, and a 180-square-metre play space.

The application was deferred at the last planning committee meeting (Sept 7) so that the developer could undertake consultation with the Terranora public school, so that they could ‘agree on a traffic management plan that would address any potential concerns of Terranora Public School’.

The developer met with the school a week later to discuss their concerns, which included child safety and parking.

The developer’s traffic consultant, CTP Consult, then wrote to Council asserting that the findings of its own traffic impact assessment remain valid and that ‘the proposed development is not expected to compromise the safety of function of the surrounding road network.’

The school’s P&C also expressed a number of concerns in relation to the plan, and requested a number of changes.

As a result, councillors voted to adopt a series of amended conditions, including that a number of No Stopping areas, and No Right Turn sign be introduced at and around the site.

This includes the introduction of No Stopping signs from the childcare centre down to Sharma Road, and on the north side from the entrance of the Terranora Primacy School to the children’s crossing.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
