Advocates for conservation of ecosystems at a proposed residential development site in Brunswick Heads are planning a public meeting this week.
Community group Save Wallum say the site, next door to a temporary housing pod village at Bayside on Brunswick Heads, is a place of cultural significance and host to a rare and beautiful ecosystem under threat of destruction.
The public meeting this Thursday evening is to include information for anyone new to the environmental campaign that has so far included action both on-site and at the Byron Shire Council chambers in Mullumbimby.
Byron Shire Deputy Mayor Sarah Ndiaye has previously said the proposed housing estate would never be approved under today’s planning laws but the developer is acting on so-called ‘zombie development’ approval from years ago when environmental regulations were more lax and out of line with contemporary biodiversity concerns.
Save Wallum members say their meeting this week will feature campaign updates, action planning, special guest speakers, raffle tickets, stickers and photography calendars for sale, T-Shirt printing and more.
The meeting is to start from 6pm at the Mullum Civic hall, Thursday 14 December.
