Over 1,000 people flocked to Byron Bay on the weekend to either compete or spectate at one of Australia’s top BJJ events, the BJJ National Australian Open (BJJAO).

‘It was a great day for Brazilian jiu jitsu and a great day for Byron Bay,’ tournament director Raz Harel said.

‘We were hosting the BJJAO League’s National Australian Open at the Cavanbah  Centre on Sunday’.

The majority of competitors were Australian, but 22 countries were represented overall.

Local school, The Academy, took the first place in ‘Best Academy’, with 24 competitors. Southside BJJ (Qld) took second place with 22 competitors and Galeb Brothers (Qld) took third with 21.

A total of $9,000 in prize money was available to men and women across various disciplines and skill levels.

‘The next BJJAO event in Byron Bay will be held on 19 May and we’re looking forward to a great local presence,’ Raz said.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.
