Plans for the construction of a $6.46 million home at Wategos Beach have come before Byron Council, and are now on public exhibition.

The proposal is for a four-bedroom split-level house spread across three storeys at 28 Brownell Drive.

The owners, listed as John and Tamie Ingham, are also proposing to build a basement carpark and an upper level garage off Brownell Drive that will be supported on a suspended slab.

Following the recent trend of new houses at the iconic and astronomically expensive location, the construction of the house would involve significant excavation into the Wategos hillside.

Concerns have previously been raised about the drainage and erosion impacts of this building practice.

However, the Statement of Environmental Effects for the site states that a geotechnical report has been prepared which makes a series of recommendations to minimise these risks.

The statement also defends breaching height plane regulations, as they are ‘not unusual on steep sites in this location’.

Support The Echo

Keeping the community together and the community voice loud and clear is what The Echo is about. More than ever we need your help to keep this voice alive and thriving in the community.

Like all businesses we are struggling to keep food on the table of all our local and hard working journalists, artists, sales, delivery and drudges who keep the news coming out to you both in the newspaper and online. If you can spare a few dollars a week – or maybe more – we would appreciate all the support you are able to give to keep the voice of independent, local journalism alive.

  1. Sorry but anything to do with Wategoes developments basically can be summed up into one word:

    Lol.

ANYTHING goes there. Period. The obscene amounts of money guarantee it. It is just a question of time and persistence (greasing palms). One day it’s going to erode and then everyone will call it a tragedy while cackling behind their hands. That’s just how it is for Wategoes.
The real tragedy is going to be the walking paths and the lighthouse but the ultra rich come first.
