Happy International Women’s Day! In a place like Australia, it is hard to believe that women ever had to fight to get the vote let alone that once women didn’t have the right to own property or self-determination.

Yet we are still fighting for equality, inclusion, and an equal share of the housework… If the unpaid work women did globally were to be recognised and given a monetary value they would account for more than 40 per cent of GDP. This year International Women’s Day (IWD), which is held annually on 8 March, is focussing on the value of inspiring the inclusion of women in all areas of life and investing in women so that their full value is recognised.

The Lismore Women’s Festival has a full program throughout the day at Southern Cross University, Lismore Campus, Military Road, East Lismore. Check out what’s on here.

Lismore Women’s Festival

The Art of Woman opened the Lismore Women’s Festival last night at the Serpentine Gallery in Lismore with Lismore Councillor Elly Bird speaking about the strengths that women bring to our community, especially during our time of recovery.

Today the Lismore Women’s Festival is holding a wide range of events in Lismore starting with a free morning yoga session on The Deck at Southern Cross University, Lismore Campus, Military Road, East Lismore. From there, you have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of free and paid-for events throughout the day from enjoying Bay FM Sista’s of Spin to keynote speaker, Ashani Dante presented by comedian Mandy Nolan.

To achieve equality in education, closing the gender pay gap, and awareness of the vital role of women both in the home and workplace are key and part of inspiring and achieving the key UN challenge of gender equality by 2030.

When women are included, educated and have control of their lives the world is a better place. They bring diversity and engagement and help deliver positive, respectful and accepting workplaces.

However, in workforces that are traditionally male bringing women into the workplace and the benefits they deliver takes thought and engagement. Looking at what blocks are in place for female application, participation, and promotion in the workforce of a business as well as ensuring there is a safe and inclusive workplace environment is a clear place to start.

Valuing women, including them and providing support and opportunity are all key ways individuals and businesses can work towards creating a better world for everyone.
