Murwillumbah was severely impacted by the 2022 floods and it was a huge community effort to support, rescue and inspire everyone to move forward.
A key person who lobbied across all areas of government in support of improving the town of Murwillumbah, and in particular its drainage, was Murwillumbah Chamber of Commerce president Rebecca Whan.
‘Rebecca tirelessly worked on behalf of the Murwillumbah community to get funding,’ said Lismore MP Janelle Saffin as she presented the award to Rebecca at the business chamber event at the M-Arts in Murwillumbah.
‘She lobbied everyone on drains and she was instrumental in getting money to work on the drains in Murwillumbah via the Tweed Shire Council.’
‘I am so pleased to receive this award on behalf of my community,’ Rebecca said.
‘It has been an extremely tough time for all to go through, but I’m very happy to see my lobbying efforts for the CBD pump and drain upgrades were listened to, and adequate state funding awarded. Works will commence in August 2024 which is very exciting for the community and provides hope of future flood relief, especially to businesses such as the M-Arts Precinct which had 1.5m of water flow through it, destroying the livelihood of many artists working there.
‘I could not have had the impact I had without the enormous support of local MP Janelle Saffin as well as top engineers in Tweed Shire Council.’
