Minor traffic disruption with traffic control in place is expected in Byron Bay’s Main Beach car park this week.
The Byron Shire Council has advised four days’ worth of work is due to start today Monday 13 May on an emergency access ramp from the car park to Belongil Beach.
Plans include improvements to the gravel track from the car park and construction of a concrete ramp to the beach.
Byron Shire Council Manager Open Spaces and Facilities Malcolm Robertson says coastal erosion and ‘wave events’ have damaged the existing emergency access point on the western side of the coastal protection works at Jonson Street to the point where it is unusable.
‘This has led to the Byron Surf Life Savers and emergency services being unable to reach the beach with vehicles during emergencies,’ Mr Robertson said.
The council has hired Soil Conservation Service to carry out the work, citing $80,000 in funding from the Crown Pay Parking fund.
Mr Robertson says the company worked on the Main and Clarkes Beach Dune Recovery Project and is ‘extremely experienced in beach works and coastal management’.
